Based on a former IMSA GT F40 LM, the F40 Barchetta is a one-off race version of the iconic F40. In the early 1990s, Belgian-born billionaire and racer Jean Blaton (alias: Jeans Beurlys) bought the car and wanted to have something different than others. The story goes that he got in touch with Tony Gillet, another Belgian former racing driver, and they decided to remove its roof.
Gillet partnered with Michelotto to start the operation. Apart from the roof removal, the exhaust system was removed from the rear and relocated on either sides of the car. A Lexan window was added and to make the car stiffer, and actually relatively competitive, a steel cage was installed.
Michelotto also removed the power limiter on the engine, which resulted in a power output of about 760 hp. Once the project was done, Ferrari ordered Jean to remove the Ferrari and F40 logos as well. Although the car never received an official name, it’s known as the F40 Barchetta or F40 Beurlys in the Ferrari community.
