Inside the Ferrari Hypersail Yacht project (9 things to know)

Ferrari has just pulled the wraps off the Hypersail project, and as expected, it’s raising a few eyebrows. So, let’s take a quick dive into what makes this bold new venture tick and why it’s more than just a pretty hull with a Prancing Horse on it.

1. Yes, Ferrari really is building a boat

It’s not a joke or a marketing stunt: Ferrari has officially entered the world of yacht design. Announced in June 2025, the Hypersail Project is a 100-foot sailing yacht being developed under the watchful eye of Giovanni Soldini, the iconic Italian sailor and Ferrari ambassador.

And no, you won’t find a V12 engine onboard—but we’ll get to that.

2. The name ‘Hypersail’ isn’t just for show

“Hype” isn’t an exaggeration here. The name “Hypersail” reflects the futuristic, high-speed, and hyper-efficient design behind the yacht. It’s designed to “fly” above the water using advanced foiling technology (a system of underwater wings called hydrofoils that lift the hull out of the water at high speeds) reducing drag and increasing velocity dramatically.

3. Formula 1 engineering

It wouldn’t be Ferrari without a little F1 magic. The Hypersail borrows heavily from Ferrari’s motorsport R&D. Engineers and designers from Ferrari’s GT and Formula 1 departments have poured their expertise into this boat. Expect carbon fiber structures, advanced aerodynamics, data-driven design choices and a focus on weight optimization, just like a race car.

4. Legendary sailor leads the charge

If there’s anyone who could steer Ferrari into uncharted waters, it’s Giovanni Soldini (second from right). The record-breaking sailor is at the helm of the Hypersail project and brings decades of offshore racing experience. Soldini has said this project is “a real laboratory of ideas,” combining innovation, performance, and environmental responsibility.

5. 100% electric

The Hypersail is fully electric, aiming for zero emissions at sea. While full technical specs are still under wraps, Ferrari confirmed that the yacht will use solar energy and battery systems to power its operations.

6. Test bed for innovation

The Hypersail is more of a prototype, a living lab where Ferrari and its partners can experiment with new technologies. So, it's not a production yacht for the billionaire yacht club. Everything from structural materials to onboard systems will be evaluated, refined, and perhaps used in future Ferrari road cars.

7. Construction is well underway

The project of the Hypersail is a joint effort between Ferrari and a team of expert marine engineers, naval architects, and performance specialists. The first real-world tests are expected in the coming year, with more details likely to emerge as Ferrari gets closer to sea trials. Until then, we’re keeping a close eye on every sketch, teaser, and behind-the-scenes update.

8. Is the Ferrari Hypersail going racing?

Ferrari has described the project as a “sporting challenge” and a "floating innovation" lab. The goal isn’t to compete in offshore competition, but to push boundaries in efficiency, sustainability, and cutting-edge marine technology. Think of it less like a yacht vying for trophies, and more like a prototype car pounding test laps at Fiorano.

9. This isn’t the first time Ferrari built a boat

Timossi-Ferrari 'Arno XI' Racing Hydroplane

Rewind to the early 1950s, and you’ll meet the Arno XI, a sleek, hydroplane-style speedboat powered by none other than a Ferrari 375 F1 V12 engine. Commissioned by Italian speedboat racer Achille Castoldi, the Arno XI set a world record on Lake Iseo in 1953, hitting a jaw-dropping 150.49 mph (242.708 km/h), a record that still stands in its category to this day. It wasn’t a Ferrari-built hull, but the Prancing Horse’s powertrain and technical support were very much behind its blistering speed.

The boat was even painted in classic Rosso Corsa and wore the iconic Ferrari badge on its flanks, with Enzo Ferrari personally approving the engine build. In every way that mattered, it was a Ferrari on water.
