Ferrari Introduces Two New Drop-Top Cars

After revealing the F8 Tributo earlier this year, it was a no-brainer the F8 Spider would eventually accompany its coupe counterpart. The real news is the 812 GTS, which brings back the production-V12-spider after 50 years of absence.

V8

The F8 Spider is a continuation of a tradition that started in 1977 with the Ferrari 308 GTS.

The rear-mounted engine is a development of the V8 that won the ‘International Engine of the Year Award’ for four consecutive years (2016 - 2019). It was also selected as the best engine of the last two decades.

Though the car is less extreme than the 488 Pista Spider, it’s sportier than the 488 Spider which it replaces. The F8 Spider is 20 kg lighter and packs 50 bhp more than the 488 Spider. The aerodynamics are 10% better than the outgoing car which results in a 0-100 kph (62 mph) sprint of 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 340 kph (211 mph).

Far more interesting for the Ferrari product range is the 812 GTS: the first series production front-engine V12 Ferrari convertible in almost 50 years. We have had cars such as the 575 Superamerica and F60 America, but these were all highly-limited. The 812 GTS is only available for a limited time.

The targa-designed structure has a hardtop which folds into the boot in just 14 seconds at speeds of up to 45 kph (28 mph).

The 812 GTS is said to be the most powerful convertible currently in production. The same 6.5-L V12 as in its hardtop sibling pushes out 790 bhp up to around 9000 rpm. Ferrari claims the 812 GTS has the same sprint and top speed figures as the F8 Spider.
