The Ferrari name is almost impossible to separate from the V12 engine. While the company has produced successful four cylinder, six cylinder and eight cylinder engines, the twelve cylinder layout has remained a central part of Ferrari's identity since the very beginning. At the heart of that history is the Colombo V12.
Designed by Gioachino Colombo during the 1940s, the compact engine powered the first car to carry the Ferrari name and later evolved into one of the longest serving engine families in the company's history. From the 125 S to the 250 GTO and 365 GTB/4, the Colombo V12 powered some of Ferrari's most important road and racing cars.
Origins of the Colombo V12
The story of the Ferrari Colombo V12 began before Ferrari officially became a car manufacturer. Enzo Ferrari had spent much of his career surrounded by racing cars and powerful engines. During his years with Alfa Romeo, he developed a strong appreciation for twelve cylinder engines and believed the layout offered an ideal combination of smoothness, power and racing potential. When Ferrari began developing its first car, Enzo wanted a V12.
This was an ambitious decision. Ferrari was a new and relatively small company, while a twelve cylinder engine was complicated and expensive to develop. However, Enzo Ferrari believed the engine should be the defining feature of the car. Engineer Gioachino Colombo was asked to create the new powerplant. Colombo had previously worked at Alfa Romeo and already knew Enzo Ferrari from his earlier career.

His solution was a remarkably compact 60 degree V12 engine with a total displacement of only 1,496.77 cc. Each cylinder displaced approximately 125 cc, giving Ferrari's first car its name, the 125 S with S standing for Sport. The original Colombo V12 used a single overhead camshaft for each cylinder bank and produced approximately 118 hp. Despite its small capacity, Ferrari's first engine had twelve cylinders and was designed with competition in mind.
From the Ferrari 125 S to the 166
The Colombo V12 made its competition debut in the Ferrari 125 S in 1947. The car failed to finish its first race at Piacenza, an event Enzo Ferrari famously described as a promising failure. However, the 125 S quickly proved its potential and Ferrari began winning races during its first season.

Ferrari immediately continued developing the V12. One of the greatest strengths of Colombo's design was its ability to grow in capacity. The original engine was extremely compact, giving Ferrari room to increase the displacement and create more powerful versions. The Ferrari 159 S used a larger version of the V12, followed by the Ferrari 166.
With a displacement of approximately 2.0 litres, the 166 engine became one of Ferrari's first truly successful powerplants. The Ferrari 166 S and 166 MM achieved major victories in international competition. Ferrari won the Mille Miglia in 1948 and 1949, while the 166 MM also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 24 Hours of Spa in 1949. These victories helped establish Ferrari as a serious international manufacturer. Only two years after the first Ferrari car appeared, the Colombo V12 had already won some of the most important races in the world.
The Colombo V12 continues to grow
Ferrari continued increasing the displacement of the Colombo V12 during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The 195 series used a larger 2.3 litre version, while the Ferrari 212 received an engine with a displacement of approximately 2.6 litres. These developments demonstrated the flexibility of Colombo's original design.

Instead of creating a completely new engine for every model, Ferrari could continue improving the basic V12 architecture. Changes to the cylinder dimensions, fuel system and internal components allowed engineers to create engines for different purposes. Some versions were designed primarily for racing, while others were developed for road cars and grand touring. This flexibility became one of the defining features of the Colombo V12 family. However, the most famous version was still to come.
The Ferrari 250 and the 3.0 litre Colombo V12
In 1952, Ferrari introduced a 3.0 litre version of the Colombo V12. The engine became closely associated with the Ferrari 250 series. Ferrari's model naming system was often based on the approximate displacement of a single cylinder. Each cylinder in the 3.0 litre V12 displaced approximately 250 cc, giving the cars their famous 250 name.

The Colombo V12 would power an extraordinary number of Ferrari 250 models, including the 250 MM, 250 Europa GT, 250 GT Coupé, 250 GT Cabriolet, 250 GT California Spider, 250 GT Berlinetta SWB, 250 Testa Rossa and 250 GTO. Although these cars shared the same basic engine family, Ferrari continually developed the V12.
Different models received changes to their carburettors, compression ratios, cylinder heads and lubrication systems. Racing engines were designed to produce maximum performance, while road car versions placed greater emphasis on smooth power delivery and reliability. The 3.0 litre Colombo V12 became one of the most successful and recognisable engines in Ferrari history.
The Colombo V12 in the 250 GTO
Perhaps the most famous car powered by the Colombo V12 is the Ferrari 250 GTO. Introduced in 1962, the 250 GTO was developed for international GT racing. Its 3.0 litre V12 was closely related to the engine used in the 250 Testa Rossa competition cars and used six Weber carburettors to produce approximately 300 hp at 7,500 rpm.

A carburettor mixes fuel and air before the mixture enters the engine. By using six Weber carburettors, Ferrari could supply the V12 with the fuel and air required for racing. The engine was compact, powerful and already well proven in competition.
Ferrari won the International Championship for GT Manufacturers in 1962, 1963 and 1964, with the 250 GTO playing an important role in those successes. The car's racing record made it one of the most famous Ferraris ever produced and the Colombo V12 was central to its performance.
The four cam Colombo V12
By the 1960s, Ferrari was continuing to develop the Colombo engine for more powerful road cars. One of the most important developments arrived with the Ferrari 275 GTB/4. The 275 series used a 3.3 litre version of the Colombo V12 and, once again, the model name was based on the approximate capacity of each cylinder.
The original 275 GTB used two overhead camshafts, one for each cylinder bank. However, the 275 GTB/4 introduced a four camshaft version of the Colombo V12, with two overhead camshafts for each cylinder bank. This arrangement gave Ferrari engineers greater control over the intake and exhaust valves, improving the movement of air through the engine and supporting stronger performance at high engine speeds.

The 3,285.72 cc V12 produced 300 hp at 8,000 rpm. The 275 GTB/4 showed just how far the Colombo V12 had developed. The original engine produced approximately 118 hp from 1.5 litres in 1947. Less than twenty years later, the same basic engine family had more than doubled in capacity and reached 300 hp.
Ferrari 330 and 365 Colombo V12 engines
Ferrari also developed larger versions of the Colombo V12 for its grand touring cars. The Ferrari 330 series used a 4.0 litre V12, with models including the 330 GT 2+2, 330 GTC and 330 GTS combining strong performance with greater comfort and refinement.
For the 330 engine, Ferrari made important changes to the basic Colombo architecture. The spacing between the cylinders was increased, giving engineers more room for further development. This helped prepare the engine family for even larger capacities.

The Ferrari 365 generation followed with a V12 of approximately 4.4 litres. The engine appeared in models including the 365 California, 365 GT 2+2, 365 GTC and 365 GTS. One of the most famous applications was the Ferrari 365 GTB/4. Often known unofficially as the Daytona, a name closely linked to Ferrari's famous 1967 victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona, the 365 GTB/4 used a four cam Colombo V12 with six Weber carburettors and produced approximately 352 hp in European specification.
Introduced in 1968, the 365 GTB/4 arrived more than twenty years after the first Ferrari 125 S. The difference between the two cars was enormous. However, both belonged to the same remarkable Colombo V12 story.
Why Ferrari used the Colombo V12 for so long
The Colombo V12 remained in production for decades because its basic design was extremely adaptable. The engine was compact for a twelve cylinder powerplant, making it suitable for relatively small sports cars and racing cars. Its aluminium construction also helped reduce weight.
Another major advantage was smooth power delivery: a V12 uses twelve cylinders firing in a carefully arranged sequence, allowing the engine to deliver power smoothly while also operating at high engine speeds. For racing, the Colombo V12 offered strong performance and excellent development potential. For road cars, the same basic engine could provide smoothness and flexibility.

Ferrari could change the displacement, carburettors, camshafts and other components to create engines for very different cars. The Colombo V12 could power an endurance racing car, a lightweight GT competition car or a luxurious grand tourer. Few engine designs have demonstrated the same level of flexibility.
Colombo V12 compared with the Lampredi V12
The Colombo V12 was not Ferrari's only early twelve cylinder engine. During the 1950s, engineer Aurelio Lampredi developed a separate family of Ferrari V12 engines. The Lampredi V12 was generally larger and was designed around different racing requirements. It powered several important Ferrari competition cars and road models.

The Colombo and Lampredi engines were separate designs. However, the Colombo V12 ultimately had the longer production life. Its compact dimensions and ability to grow in capacity allowed Ferrari to continue developing the engine for many years. While the Lampredi V12 played an important role in Ferrari's early racing history, the Colombo engine became more closely connected with Ferrari's road car identity.
The legacy of the Ferrari Colombo V12
Few engines have influenced Ferrari as deeply as the Colombo V12. It powered the first Ferrari and helped the young company achieve major international racing victories. It later became the engine of the Ferrari 250 generation, powering cars including the 250 GT California Spider, 250 GT Berlinetta SWB, 250 Testa Rossa and 250 GTO.
The engine continued to develop through the 275, 330 and 365 generations. What began as a tiny 1.5 litre V12 eventually grew into a family of large and powerful engines for Ferrari's fastest road cars. The Colombo V12 also helped establish the twelve cylinder engine as a defining part of Ferrari's identity.

Ferrari has developed many different engines since 1947. Some have used four cylinders, six cylinders or eight cylinders. Others have used turbocharging, hybrid technology and increasingly advanced electronic systems. However, the story of the Ferrari engine begins with twelve cylinders. It begins with Gioachino Colombo and the 125 S.
