When Ferrari trademarks a name, it usually means something exciting is coming. Recently, Motor1 reported that two mysterious names popped up in trademark filings: SC40 and CZ26. Ferrari hasn’t revealed anything official yet, so could these be new special editions? A nod to Ferrari’s past? Or something we’ve never seen before? Let’s take a closer look at what these names might mean.

SC40: a hint of the Ferrari F40?

Ferrari F40

The name SC40 feels familiar. “SC” could stand for Scuderia or Speciale, two terms Ferrari often uses for performance-focused models. But it’s the “40” that really catches the eye.

The Ferrari F40, introduced in 1987, remains one of the brand’s most iconic models. The name SC40 may reference this legacy, possibly indicating a future model influenced by similar design principles. Notably, Lewis Hamilton, who has joined Scuderia Ferrari’s Formula 1 team, has previously stated that the F40 is his favorite Ferrari model.

Despite the lack of official details, some have suggested that the SC40 could be part of Ferrari’s limited-run Icona Series, which includes the Monza SP1, Monza SP2, and Daytona SP3, all of which reinterpret classic Ferrari designs with modern performance and engineering.

CZ26: still a mystery

The second name, CZ26, is a bit of a mystery. It doesn’t match any known Ferrari model, past or present. That’s why many believe it could be part of the Ferrari Special Projects, so a one-off made for a private client.

Some speculate the number 26 might connect to a historic Ferrari racing car, maybe even from the 1960s. But the truth is, no one knows for sure. And that’s what makes it exciting. CZ26 could thus be something completely new.

Why these trademarks matter

Ferrari 296 Speciale

Ferrari has already confirmed it’s launching six new cars in 2025, including the track-focused 296 Speciale. That leaves room for a few surprises. SC40 and CZ26 could be two of them.

Ferrari rarely trademarks a name without purpose. These filings are almost always linked to real, upcoming projects, whether they turn out to be production models, heritage-inspired tributes, or exclusive one-offs. Whatever their form, we're sure they will be very exciting cars no matter what.

What happens now?

We’ll have to wait for Ferrari to share what comes next. But it wouldn’t be surprising if spy shots, design leaks, or carefully crafted teasers begin to emerge from Maranello in the months ahead.

SC40 and CZ26 could make their debut at a major international auto show or arrive without warning, as many Ferrari legends have in the past.
